Your five-minute guided breath practice for Day 1 of Healing from Within. Listen and follow at your own pace.
Practice transcript
Hello, and welcome to this guided practice to connect with your breath.
Begin by finding a comfortable seat or a spot where you can rest. Let your body settle into the support beneath you. You can close your eyes if you'd like, or let your gaze rest softly on something nearby.
We'll begin with three deep, comfortable breaths. There's no need to force or fill your lungs completely.
Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth with a sigh.
Again, breathing in through your nose and letting it go with a sigh.
One more time. Breathe in. And out.
Now allow your breath to find a gentle rhythm in through your nose and out through your nose if that feels comfortable.
Notice the air entering your nostrils traveling down your trachea and into your lungs.
As you inhale, your diaphragm moves downward making room for your lungs to expand.
As you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and your ribs settle.
Let your shoulders soften. Allow your jaw to loosen.
You may notice your heartbeat settling or a little more space between your thoughts.
Whatever you notice, you don't need to make anything happen.
If thoughts come, imagine them dissipating with each exhale.
For now, picture them moving beyond the space where you need to worry about them.
You can always return to them later.
For these next few moments, simply sit with your breath.
Now, as you continue breathing naturally, imagine the journey that each breath begins.
Air enters through your nose, travels down your trachea, and reaches the tiny air sacs in your lungs called alveoli.
Here oxygen passes into the surrounding capillaries and is picked up by your red blood cells.
At the same time, carbon dioxide moves from your blood into those air sacs, ready to leave with your next exhale.
The oxygen-rich blood travels through your pulmonary veins to the left atrium of your heart, then into the left ventricle.
From there, your heart pumps into the aorta, sending it throughout your body, toward your brain, through the vessels supplying your arms and hands, down through your abdomen, your digestive organs, your legs, and your feet.
Your circulation carries oxygen and nutrients to the tissues throughout your body.
Imagine that steady flow supporting you as you rest here.
In the tiny capillaries, your blood delivers oxygen and picks up carbon dioxide.
It returns through your veins, through the vena cava, and into the right atrium of your heart, then into the right ventricle, which pumps it through the pulmonary arteries back to your lungs.
There, carbon dioxide passes into the alveoli.
As your diaphragm relaxes and your lungs recoil, you breathe it out, through your trachea, through your nose, and into the air.
You don't need to direct any of this.
Your body is already carrying on this rhythm.
For a few more breaths, imagine that flow of energy through your body.
Notice any gentle relaxation or connection available in this moment.
Let this breath be an anchor you can return to.
We'll build on this connection in the practices ahead.
When you're ready, notice the support beneath you.
Gently move your fingers and toes.
If your eyes were closed, allow them to open.
Take your time returning to your day and thank you for joining me.
